On Sept 11, 2008 Jessica
Melore delivered an inspiring
keynote address at our
fundraiser for the Women's
Heart Foundation (WHF).
After her talk there was a
cocktail and networking dinner
- money was raised for Bonnie
Arkus's Women's Heart
Foundation, a 501 c3
organization. This organization
focuses on improving the
survival and quality of life for
women with heart disease.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
The Story of Jessica Melore
Jessica was named Glamour Magazine’s “Top 10 College
Women of 2002”. That same year she won YWCA’s "Woman
of Inspiration Award”. She has been featured in print media
ranging from Woman’s Day, Glamour Magazine, Star Ledger
and National Geographic Explorer for Kids and on several
TV programs.
These accomplishments take on a new dimension when she
reveals that when she was just 16 years old, she suffered a
massive heart attack and was not expected to live through
the night. For nine months she lived on a battery-operated
mechanical assist device as she awaited a heart transplant.
Complications led to the amputation of her left leg, Non-
Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and additional hurdles in the years
that followed.
Her amazing story of courage and determination has been
what the television show Extra! has deemed “An
inspirational tale of survival that gives us all hope.”

Extract of Speech given by Dilip Keshu, organizing sponsor:
Ladies and Gentleman
Thank you for coming. I know it must have been difficult given that
schools have opened. I appreciate your support.
As all of you know, 9/11 is etched in our personal memories and
collective history because on that day in 2001 the world bore
witness to the darkest, cruelest side of human beings. But we
remember this day not because of the loss of life -there are surely
many regional conflicts, acts of genocide in barbaric places and
natural calamities that have caused greater loss of life – we
remember 9/11 because of the thousands of acts of courage,
sacrifice and heroism demonstrated on that day and after, which
have altered the course of our lives and the history of nations.
To commemorate 9/11, I wanted to do some good – light a candle
so to speak. That’s why I organized this fund raiser for the WHF.
The first is dedicated to COURAGE. Next year I hope the theme will
be HEROISM and the year after, SACRIFICE.
There is no better icon I could think of to speak of Courage. Not
in a battlefield or a war mission but someone who has
demonstrated this every day in a life that is much like ours. It gives
me pleasure to introduce Jessica Melore to you.
Jessica had a heart attack when she was a teen. She then had a
heart transplant, lost of limb and soon after had to fight cancer.
She survived all this to lead a normal life. That is the Courage that
underpins the human spirit. That is the spirit we commemorate on
this day.
Before I do that I would like to thank our sponsors.
