African American Art
Much of the African American art we see today is not distinct from
"non-African" American art. The term is very broad and refers to
visual arts from the black community in the US.

From the time of the first slave communities, African-American art
has morphed dramatically - from primarily African influences to
Latin, European, Asian and native American influences. In short, few
African American artists focus on themes and influences that are
uniquely related to their community. A good example is the world
famous Jean-Michel Basquiat. His art was unique and contemporary
but had little in it that could be classified as uniquely African
American. In other words we are tempted to say that much of
modern African American art is synonymous with American art.

This section focuses on those artists whose work shows us strong
influences of African American history like
Kara Walker, Louis J.
Delsarte, Renee Stout.
